CHAPTER 13
NEIMAN (NEUMAN) FAMILY

Anna Martha Lippard was born circa 1714 in Germany, and according to the Faulkner Swamp church records was buried 19 March 1780 (age 66) in New Hanover Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Faulkner Swamp German Reformed Church. She married (date and place unknown) Johan Heinrich Neiman (Neuman, Niman), a "cordwainer" (shoemaker) who was born circa 1717 in Germany. His will is dated 8 July 1797, New Hanover Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania; he was buried 10 July 1797, at the age of nearly eighty, at Faulkner Swamp German Reformed Church.

There were in the early days at Faulkner Swamp numerous members of the Neiman family with their arriving in Philadelphia on different ships in different years. Yet they all seem to be related as evidenced by their being baptismal sponsors for one another's children and eventually also for Heinrich and Anna Martha Lippard Neiman's children and they for theirs at Faulkner Swamp. As examples, a Christopher Nyeman (Neuman) was in the Faulkner Swamp area as early as 1734. Johan Christophel and Carl Neiman arrived on the ship Glasgow, one of the five ships of the Hope Company including the Queen Elizabeth that left Rotterdam together in 1738. However, they arrived in Philadelphia a week apart, the Glasgow on 9 September and the Queen Elizabeth on 16 September. It was not unusual for ships that left Europe together to arrive separately in America because of its being nearly impossible to keep ships together on such a long ocean voyage at that time. Winds, currents, storms, etc., all influenced each individual ship differently.

Heinrich Neiman did not arrive in Philadelphia until 3 December 1740, sailing from Rotterdam on the ship Robert and Alice, two years after the Lippards arrived in Philadelphia. We cannot be certain whether or not Anna Martha traveled to Philadelphia with her Lippard family, or whether she and Heinrich Neiman were already married in Germany and arrived together in 1740.

The Lippards and the Neimans may have met in Germany, in Rotterdam, or even not until Faulkner Swamp. In time after their marriage, Heinrich and Anna Martha owned land in New Hanover Township and a dwelling in Limerick, adjacent to New Hanover and Faulkner Swamp.

Another apparent relative, Hermannus (Herman) Neiman did not arrive in Philadelphia until the ship Restoration docked on 9 October 1747. Records indicate that the Neiman family was from Bavaria. At Faulkner Swamp they sponsored each others' children in baptisms. Herman's son Henry's baptismal sponsors in 1754 were Heinrich and Anna Martha; Herman and his wife Catherine sponsored Henrich and Anna Martha's daughter Catherina in 1756. Through these and other family entanglements, it does appear that the large Neiman family arrived on different ships in different years, and each of them also appear to be intertwined with Heinrich and Anna Martha.

Children of Heinrich and Anna Martha Lippard Neiman -- As there are many Neiman children in the Faulkner Swamp church records, I have attempted to compile as accurate a list of Anna Martha and Heinrich's children as possible based on baptismal and confirmation records.

Martha Elizabeth Neiman 1750-?
Carl (Charles) Neiman 1751-1833 m. Elizabeth Liebenguth
Johan Neiman ca. 1752-1792 m. 13 May 1781 Margaret McGraw
Anna Maria Neiman 1753 - ? m. 13 March 1781 Georg Jodde
Catherina Neiman 24 June 1756- ? m. 18 June 1782 John Georg Defrain (Frene)
Conrad Neiman 1760-? m. 20 November 1781 Catharina Bender
Henry Neiman 25 April 1761-1788 m. 20 January 1778 Maria Kugler
Jacob Neiman 1763 - ?
Friedrich Johann Neiman

Summarizing, it is in Conrad's will that we first learn that he has a daughter, Anna Martha, who, by the time of Conrad's death, is married to Henry (Heinrich) Neiman, who arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Robert and Alice on 3 December 1740, a little more than two years after the Lippards.

ANNA MARTHA AND WILHELM AND FAMILY NAMES

What more do we know of Anna Martha, Conrad's daughter and Wilhelm's sister?

As I mentioned earlier, Anna Martha and Heinrich Neiman remain in Pennsylvania even after Conrad's death and Wilhelm's family's departure. For several generations their descendants remain in the Faulkner Swamp area but then disappear unless some descendants from daughters with different surnames remain.

Among Reverend Leydich's burial records at Faulkner Swamp Church is that of Anna Martha, who was born around 1714 and died at age 66 and was buried on 19 March 1780. This record tells us that Anna Martha is fifteen years younger than her brother Wilhelm. Does the fact that she and her husband, Heinrich Neiman, name none of their five sons after her brother, and he names no child for her indicate any problem in the family? German tradition generally dictated that the grandparents' names be carried into the grandchildren's generation and brothers' and sisters' names frequently were also. Among the Faulkner Swamp church records are a number of entries pertaining to Anna Martha and Heinrich's eight children, one son obviously named for his maternal grandfather Conrad, one daughter possibly named for Wilhelm's wife Catharina, but no son named for Anna Martha's brother Wilhelm. Why? On the other hand, peculiarly as far as I can tell, there have been only a very few children in Wilhelm's branch, our branch, of the family named for Wilhelm's father, Conrad, unless Wilhelm had a son named Conrad who died young, even perhaps in Germany. Again, why? More questions left unanswered.

Seth Lippard, who died in April 2015 in Audubon, Pennsylvania, collected most of the following information concerning the family of Anna Martha Lippard and Heinrich Neiman.

HEINRICH NEIMAN'S WILL AND ESTATE PAPERS

Following are some documents filed after the death of Heinrich Neiman in the settlement of his estate. Heinrich Neiman's Will, which is on file in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, is too dim to reproduce here. Instead, I (Harriet) have interpreted it, again leaving blanks where words are undecipherable to me.

Jacob Mourer - Jacob Shoener
Heinrich Neuman - Jacob Croess

In this will dated 8 July 1797, Henry Neiman names his grandson Edward Conar (elsewhere spelled Conner) as his sole executor. Who is Edward Conar/Conner? Perhaps Heinrich failed to note that one of his daughters, either Martha Elizabeth or Anna Maria were married to someone with the surname Conar/Conner or that Catherine had been married to someone with the surname Conar/Conner before marrying her last husband, Defrain. Otherwise, if Edward's parent, a child of Heinrich and Anna Martha, was deceased, it would seem that Henry would have left Edward a portion of his estate as he did his other two grandsons, sons of Henry, Jr. It would seem that his other children – Carl, John, Anna Maria, Jacob, and Conrad – must have died before Heinrich and without issue, or they and/or their children must have left Pennsylvania for distant places where an inheritance from Heinrich would not have reached them, or they must have already received their "inheritances" before Heinrich's death.

As reported in the following document, it is apparent that Heinrich Neiman died in debt to a large number of his friends, neighbors, and relatives.

An additional interesting document concerning the settling of Heinrich's estate is an accounting of the public auction of his personal possessions. Each of the following names and some of the articles have an X through them as though someone was marking them off as he tallied them. These X's make it very difficult to read many of the purchasers' names and the names of the articles purchased.
